A lovely and painful attribute of short stories is that their brevity can create a swift jab to the gut of the reader For me this isn't usually the case but when it does happen in a short story collection one story like that can actually make me think that the entire book is phenomenal David Armstrong's debut collection has much than just one jab in it It actually kind of rocked my emotions with a bombardment of jabs several sucker punches and at least one super brutal uppercut that I can remember These stories have affected me on a very personal level because they deal with what it means to be not only a man but an imperfect man The stories illustrate that there aren't good men and bad men There are complicated men The stories aren't just told from the point of view of men either In fact I was surprised by the amount that were actually told from a female perspective Armstrong isn't an apologist for troubled and deeply flawed men but rather an illustrator who shows that these men exist and that at least to some degree they have their reasons He dives deeply into the who and it's up to the reader to decide the why Many times the reasoning isn't enough but the emotion makes the choices clearer This book took me months to read not because it wasn't engaging but because it hit so close to home Seeing my own flaws in these characters or the flaws of my father or other men I'm close to is painful but hard to turn away from In particular the story Bethesda written in 2nd person truly knocked me on my ass for several days Armstrong accurately shows the anxiety of parenthood and the desperate choices that we make when choosing for our children It's emotionally draining and filled with magical realism that instead of taking away from the true realism only makes it severe You'll feel like you should be looking away but you won't The stories will pummel you and you'll crawl back for Accessible literature that weaves thought provoking narratives through bold original and intricate characters Courier Butterscotch Strawman and Murray shine especially brightly in this collection of distinct yet connected stories
